Our Mission

The Friends of Afghan Women Network (FAWN) seeks to empower Afghan women and girls by advancing their economic resilience, safeguarding their human rights, and promoting equitable access to education.

Through innovative collaboration with private and public sector organisations, FAWN mobilises expertise, networks, and resources to champion the social, political, and economic empowerment of Afghan women. By integrating vocational training and skills development into our initiatives, we aim to equip women with practical tools to build sustainable livelihoods.

Our flagship initiative connects Afghan women and girls with global mentors and allies, creating opportunities for professional growth, personal development, and a sense of solidarity. By providing access to networks, resources, and dedicated support inside Afghanistan, we aim to help Afghan women to safely and actively contribute to Afghan society while advocating for an inclusive, peaceful future.

Who We Are

Founded in 2024 by Shabnam Nasimi, a former UK government advisor and prominent advocate for Afghan women’s rights, and Sarah Sands, former Chair of the G7 Gender Equality Advisory Council and editor of BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, FAWN was created out of a shared commitment to champion Afghan women left behind in today’s Afghanistan, ensuring their voices, potential, and aspirations are not forgotten.

FAWN is a catalyst for change, fostering innovative and scalable collaborations across the private sector, civil society, academia, philanthropies, and governments to strengthen Afghan women’s economic resilience and livelihoods. By delivering practical, actionable solutions, FAWN serves as a vital conduit between Afghan women and the global community, equipping them with the tools and opportunities needed to build sustainable self-reliance, maintain meaningful connections, and secure their economic independence.

In the face of extraordinary challenges, there are countless ways for individuals and organisations to make a meaningful difference for Afghan women. Together, we can help them unlock their potential, support their communities, and build the next generation of female leaders.

Join us in this mission to ensure that Afghan women are not only seen and heard but empowered to thrive.
